The "Home Cottage" has an enviable Keene Valley location, on a quiet 2.1± acre parcel, a mile from the village
center, and less than 1/2 mile from "the Garden" where hiking trails to Mount Marcy and several other peaks begin. Slide Brook is downhill to the west, right
in the back yard and the larger Johns Brook is just a short walk to the east. The setting, on a protected plateau high above Slide Brook, is enhanced with expansive lawns to the east,
several well-established perennial gardens, raised vegetable gardens and a pleasing variety of trees and shrubs.
The cottage was built in 1903 for the owners or managers of the former Interbrook Lodge, a year round vacation hotel and has been called "The Home Cottage" ever since. It became a year round residence in the late 1950's and was enlarged in 1973 and again in 1988, when it was modified to create two separate living spaces. Each living area has its own entry way and garage, parking areas and gardens. The Northern unit has a single car detached garage and is reached from the driveway over stone steps leading through terraced gardens to the entry. A large entry foyer with many windows has views of the gardens and leads to a large eat-in kitchen with hallway, den, a bedroom and bath. The Southern unit is entered over a deck reached either from the lawn or through the attached two-car garage. It includes a kitchen, a bright dining area with a big window overlooking the deck and gardens, a large knotty pine living room with a sunny southeast facing alcove overlooking gardens, a den and a bedroom and bath. Amenities include a fireplace with wood stove insert in the living room and a large open deck under the trees overlooking the gardens and ample storage in the second story of the garage, as well as in the basement, which has laundry facilities and other workspace. There is also a cedar lined 4-person Hilo electric sauna. An oil-fired hot water furnace having two zones serves the cottage. Water is supplied from the public system. The dwelling could easily be reconfigured to serve as a single-family home with four bedrooms and two baths. The grounds were developed over many years. Trees include sugar maple, pine, tamarack and black cherry, as well as plum, flowering crab and blue spruce. Lower bushes include lilac, burning bush, mature winterberry, hydrangea, honeysuckle, quince, rugosa, and rose juniper and rhododendron. There is an ideal bird feeding station just off the southeast deck, which can be enjoyed through the bay window of the dining area. The cottage is easy to reach at all seasons over a mile long public road westerly of Route 73 and a short driveway, part of which is plowed by the town in winter. Interbrook Lodge, with which "The Home Cottage" was originally associated, welcomed guests for many decades. In the late 50's, early 60's, it was used as a summer location for New York City's Baldwin School. The main hotel was demolished in 1966 when it no longer met safety regulations. Some of the smaller outlying cabins associated with the Lodge continue to be used by vacationing and year round families who have owned them for many years. The area is kept private and well-protected because neighbors in the area have worked together over the years to maintain the natural qualities of the area and preserve it as a quiet enclave. Two of the adjoining properties are also subject to regulation by the Adirondack Park Agency. A recent survey map is available. The Home Cottage is situated 20 minutes from the 1980 Winter Olympic skiing facilities on Whiteface Mountain and the quaint Village of Lake Placid with its Olympic venues, excellent shopping opportunities and fine restaurants. International airports at Montreal, Canada, Albany, New York and Burlington, Vermont are less than 2 hours away by car. Lake Champlain and the ferries to Vermont are less than 40 minutes to the east.
