"Stonehouse"

The Essex Village Historic District, on the West bank of Lake Champlain, was added to the National Historic Register in 1975. The Historic Significance was listed as "Architecture/Engineering, Event". The Stonehouse which was built around 1826, is a fine example of Federal Style. The house was built of stone quarried locally and was meticulously restored by the current owners. Stonehouse occupies a 100' x 114' corner lot a short block from Main Street.

From the outside, the passer-by observes two main entrances, neatly trimmed bushes and well placed flower beds. Behind the tall privacy fence the visitor discovers English style gardens, a terrace and a lovely roof covered patio. Just inside on the garden level is the main kitchen, with exposed beams, a decorative fireplace and areas for sitting and informal dining. Also on this level there is a sitting room/bedroom, bathroom with shower and storage areas.

On the main level, the front and side doorways open to a 26' long entry with grand staircase. The dining room and living room, each with a working fireplace, provide a formal, but comfortable elegance. Meals prepared in the main kitchen can be brought up on the original dumb waiter or served from the butler' pantry. A wide archway between the main rooms, high ceilings, plus lots of natural light from the sash windows, make the ample size rooms feel even larger. Wide board floors and plaster walls have been expertly restored.

All the rooms on the second level are nicely appointed. The master bedroom looks out over the back gardens and provides a quiet sanctuary with added room for reading and relaxation. It contains a walk-in closet and full private bath. The other two bedrooms share a second full bath.

The third level was renovated to create a living space for the owners when the house was being run as a Bed & Breakfast. The main room provides sleeping quarters as well as a nice sitting area. It opens onto a rooftop deck high above the gardens below, with peeks of the lake through the tops of the beautiful shade trees. The third level also contains a nice size study/bedroom and full bath.

As a private residence or as an income property with solid investment potential, please consider making an appointment very soon to see Stonehouse and discover what has been happening in Essex, New York on Lake Champlain.
