"Slide Brook Classic" has it all; stunning mountain views, a beautiful stream, a level yard, tall
evergreen trees, a southeastern exposure and an inviting expanse of piney woods. It is far enough from town to be private and quiet, yet close enough so one can easily go down to get the morning paper or a quart
of milk. The house itself, while only 2500± square feet, has been skillfully designed to accommodate, not only convenient daily life, but also comfortable gatherings of friends and family.
Outside, a driveway circles through a nicely landscaped yard. A flagstone walkway, tucked between woodland gardens leads to a small covered porch with benches on either side.
From the foyer, one can see the living room on the left and the dining area on the right. Oak floors and white ceilings compliment walls of aromatic cedar wood, applied vertically. The 21' x 21' living room has windows on three sides with views of the Giant of the Valley to the southeast, as well as Big Slide to the southwest. A massive fieldstone fireplace and built-in bookcases on the northeast wall divide the living room from the master bedroom wing. French doors opposite the fireplace lead to a very large, irregularly shaped deck from which one can see Slide Brook below. A handsome oak tree, enclosed by the deck, provides shade in one section of the deck. A hallway on the backside of the fireplace provides access to an attractive laundry room which also has a toilet and a sink. To the northeast is a tranquil 12'x 21' master bedroom with yellow pine floors, and lots of closets. Off a hallway leading to the master bedroom is a bath with a Jacuzzi. The kitchen and dining areas are open to each other. Both have lovely mountain views and plenty of light. The G-shaped kitchen has a 4-burner electric stove, refrigerator, dishwasher, double sink, and lots of cabinets with workspace below. A counter divides kitchen activities from the 10' x 13' dining area which accommodates a table for 8 to 10 people. Down the hall, beyond the kitchen/dining area, is a 16' x 21' two-story area housing a full bath, a hallway and a bright 14' x 13'6" bedroom with large corner windows showing the wooded area to the southwest and the views of Giant to the southeast. When the windows are open, one hears the babbling of the brook. Downstairs is a similar, but carpeted bedroom. It has an additional 13' x 7' walk-in storage area, which can be converted to a bathroom, if necessary. There are two other large storage areas in the downstairs hallway. Two trails lead down to Slide Brook, where there are wonderful dark pools, separated by tiny waterfalls over which the water flows swiftly. One path is short and steep and is reached by a stairway from the cottage's deck. The other longer trail passes through the wooded fringe of the front lawn, some distance from the house, and winds gently downhill through the woods and past giant granite boulders. Just above Slide Brook is a three- sided Adirondack lean-to for cookouts or overnight stays. A fireplace not far away serves another camping area, where one could pitch a tent or two. "Slide Brook Classic" is located just 30 minutes to the quaint Village of Lake Placid and its Olympic venues. Skiing at the Olympic ski center, Whiteface Mountain, is also just 30 minutes away. The International airports at Albany, New York, Burlington, Vermont and Montreal, Canada are all just a two hour drive away. Acrian's Acres, West, Keene Valley $450,000 |
