Many of the grand old homes in Westport, on Lake Champlain, were originally built around the middle of the 1800's. This one was named "Fleur de Lys" by the wife
of William D. Marks, a noted engineer of the period who designed steam engines. Mr. Marks' daughter, Jeanette Marks, was an author and
professor of English at Mount Holyoke College who lived in the house until the time of her death in 1964. Many of the books collected by the Marks family remain with
the house on beautiful shelves that line the formal living room. Georgia pine was used throughout for construction and shipped north from the Marks family
plantation. The wood remains magnificently beautiful today.
There are four fireplaces, three downstairs and one in the master bedroom. Each one is unique and together they add an old world charm and elegance. The fireplace in the formal dining room is framed by long leaded glass windows; the living room fireplace is framed by books; the sitting room fireplace is above the floor at eye level when seated. The large eat-in kitchen has been modernized, but there remains a wonderful wood/coal cook stove with a date of 1803, still useable today. All the Georgia pine, a hardwood, retains a luster that defies its age. Original leaded glass windows and French doors are found throughout the main floor and also remain in excellent condition, although some latches and hinges are being attended to by a local cabinet and door maker highly regarded for his skill. There is one small bedroom downstairs in an area off the kitchen at the bottom of a back stairway. That area can be closed off from the main rooms and seems likely to have once been used for domestic help. The remaining 6 bedrooms are upstairs and have been fitted with good quality thermopane windows that can be opened in summer for cool lake breezes. The home has a modern and efficient oil/hot water heating system that utilizes the original radiators that were converted from steam. There is new 200 amp electric throughout and the roof has been done relatively recently. From the front of the house, on the patio and from the large wrap around porch, there are wonderful views of the lake with the Green Mountains of Vermont as a backdrop. The porch has been fitted with sliding lass windows and screens, providing added comfort to the main house in all seasons. There is a wide path leading to the lakefront, which immediately in front is marshy and teaming with wildlife activity. Beyond that, on a pennisula, is a sandy and shallow beach that provides an area for swimming. On the north edge of the lakefront there are remains of what was once a crib dock, which is waiting to be restored. Westport is a safe, friendly community with one of the finest public schools in the area. The house is located just 5 miles from Exit 31 on I-87, the Northway. Westport is about 1/2 way between Albany to the south and Montreal to the north, less than a 2 hour drive. Many people have also discovered that it is possible to work in the Burlington, Vermont area and live in one of the communities on the New York side of the Champlain Valley. Westport is just 12 miles from the Essex to Charlotte Ferry, which runs the entire year. High speed internet service through local DSL, as well as cable, make staying in touch with your office and clients easy.
